HSRP-509
A creed of self-command, or of sovereignty, is no protection against the hive mode: held as a creed, self-command is hive content like any other.

3. What it rests on
-
A creed of self-command is no protection. NXIVM sold personal mastery, in self-improvement courses called "Executive Success Programs". In 2019 a federal jury convicted its founder, Keith Raniere, on all counts, including racketeering, sex trafficking and forced-labor conspiracy (forced labor: work obtained by threats of serious harm). The trial record included a secret subgroup whose members handed over "collateral", compromising material held as security, and were branded [SRC-932]. Ayn Rand's circle prized independent judgment. Nathaniel Branden, once part of it, later described a circle in which agreement with Rand's judgments, in philosophy and beyond, served as the test of rationality and morality, and dissent met moral condemnation and expulsion [SRC-933].

In both NXIVM and Rand's circle the creed praised the self while the mode placed one center above the members' judgment. Self-command is a capacity; held as a creed, it is hive content like any other (THE AUTHORITARIAN HIVE MIND).

The test applies to every movement, this site's readers included, and a creed of sovereignty is no exemption. A Canadian court that surveyed what it called "Organized Pseudolegal Commercial Argument" found litigants, followers of the "Freeman-on-the-Land movement" among them, "instructed to follow a script" sold by "gurus", in variations on themes no court had accepted [SRC-937]. Holding this site's views because the site holds them, or being unable to doubt them among fellow readers at no cost, is holding them hive-fashion.

6. Why this grade
The NXIVM convictions — ESTABLISHED as a court record. Branden's account — PROBABLE; its degree CONTESTED.

- HSRP-330 · ESTABLISHED · The mechanism is not partisan, and the evidence for that is stronger and more specific than a symmetry claim. An adversarial collaboration of researchers from three opposing camps, with an independent moderator conducting the analyses, catalogued 44 measures of rigidity and retained the single one all adversaries accepted as unconfounded: evidence-based belief updating. Across 6,181 preregistered participants, general and social conservatism predicted less updating at |b| ~ .05, below the threshold for a small effect; economic conservatism predicted nothing; political extremity at both poles predicted slightly more than direction; moderates were least rigid; and 54-68% of all participants updated toward the evidence in every domain tested. The adversaries' agreed conclusion: the practical utility of ideology as a predictor of rigidity is questionable, and the field should examine when and where rather than who. A separate meta-analysis (N = 187,612) found the conservatism-rigidity association tremendously heterogeneous, robust for social but not economic conservatism, absent outside the United States for economic conservatism, and inflated in prior literature by nonrepresentative sampling, criterion contamination and US-weighting. What survives of the asymmetry: the far right is the most rigid single group; left-wing authoritarians score LOWER than right-wing authoritarians on dogmatism and cognitive rigidity, though they score higher on behavioural aggression and correlate strongly with participation in political violence. THIS FRAMEWORK'S READING, stated as its own: a weak domain-general effect alongside strong context-specific effects is what a content-neutral, identity-triggered mechanism predicts. If the condition were a property of one political disposition it would be a trait and a general test would find it readily. The adversaries independently recommend looking for the robust effects in narrow contexts — where the information concerns a hot-button issue for a particular group — which is identity-fusion specificity under another name. KAHAN REATTRIBUTION, added 2026-09-24: this null is older than the 2025 adversarial collaboration. Kahan reported it in 2013 (SRC-437), generating both observational and experimental data "inconsistent with the hypothesis that political conservatism is distinctively associated with either unreflective thinking or motivated reasoning" — verified verbatim from that paper's abstract.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-426 · WORKING · A hive mind is a consensus held because the group holds it, not because each member judged it for himself. The test is how a view is held, not what it says.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-444 · PROBABLE · Arguments from outside barely move a hive; a nonjudgmental exchange of personal stories moved attitudes slightly but lastingly, in the one direction tested.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-461 · PROBABLE · Each side overestimates the other's support for political violence, and the real figures lower its own.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-462 · WORKING · Doubters enforce a line in public to look sincere; a falsified consensus ends when the gap becomes common knowledge.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-503 · WORKING · A cult, in this project's sense, is a hive with a center whose word ends all reasons and a fence that makes leaving costly, drawn on acts, not doctrine. In a cult every hive marker hardens, and cults form around any content, on the right and the left.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-508 · WORKING · Inside a frame the group has sealed against disconfirming evidence, members choose rationally and doubt is turned back on the doubter: Janja Lalich's "bounded choice".Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-513 · WORKING · A group whose members cannot voice doubt among their own people, or leave without losing everyone they know, has a fence, whatever it teaches. The account fails for any group whose members can do both at no cost beyond the argument, or if groups with these features hold members no better than others.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-556 · SPECULATIVE · The group keeps the disposition active through a loop of punishment, hidden doubt and false enforcement, pluralistic ignorance and a rising price on deviation, threat turning every link up; that the loop creates the disposition is speculative.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-572 · WORKING · The texts that answer them, from Jeremiah and Mencius to Cicero and Luther, bind the self to a law above it and refuse only the office in between.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-575 · WORKING · Self-command is a capacity, not a creed: held as a creed, as in pseudolegal "sovereign" scripts or North Korea's Juche, it is hive content like any other, and the test covers this site's own word "sovereign".Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-577 · WORKING · Kept private, discernment lives alongside the lie; it threatens rule by lies when it is spoken, joined by an ally and known to be shared.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-579 · PROBABLE · The claim to see through lies can itself become a hive line: believers in a conspiracy claim thought they were in the majority 93 percent of the time, when about 12 percent shared each claim.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-599 · ESTABLISHED · In Asch's studies a partner who broke a unanimous majority cut conformity sharply, even with a wrong answer of his own; the about-5% figure belongs to the partner who gave the right answer, and the break frees judgment without settling who is right.Relation: not recorded
- HSRP-603 · WORKING · Labels that deny a mind, ridicule and force tend to harden the line, and dehumanization is returned in kind; ridicule measured on its own is not yet found.Relation: not recorded
