HSRP-506
The techniques of control in cults are documented but not irresistible: most who attend never join, most who join leave, and the body that remains looks more uniform for their going.
Proof page — generated from the HSRP research notes register. Where a block has no data, it says so.

3. What it rests on
-
The techniques are real. They are documented in named groups and programs, from Lifton's state program to the sociologist Eileen Barker's study of the Unification Church's recruiting workshops [SRC-425] [SRC-916].
Source: none linked in the register -
The techniques are not irresistible. Barker found that most people who attended the workshops never joined, and that most who joined left of their own accord within a few years [SRC-916]. Of the American civilians put through thought reform in Chinese prisons, few kept the changes after release [SRC-917]. In 1987 a board of the American Psychological Association declined the report of its task force on "Deceptive and Indirect Methods of Persuasion and Control", chaired by the psychologist Margaret Singer, as lacking "the scientific rigor and evenhanded critical approach necessary for APA imprimatur", and took no position either way [SRC-918]. In 1990 a federal court excluded Singer's testimony on the theory ( United States v. Fishman ) [SRC-919] [SRC-920]. Irresistible "mind control" is not supported.

Leaving also shapes those who stay: the body that remains looks more uniform for the doubters' going (HOW A HIVE MOVES AS ONE BODY).

5. Counter-evidence
-
A narrower claim stays open: the sociologist Benjamin Zablocki argued that some groups raise the cost of leaving enough to hold some members against their own judgment [SRC-921] [SRC-922].

6. Why this grade
The 1987 decision and the 1990 exclusion — ESTABLISHED as records. Zablocki's narrower claim — OPEN QUESTION.
